One of the key aspects of the EJB architecture is its distributed nature. By distributed, we mean that all the objects might not be located within the same JVM. So the question becomes, how can you invoke methods from a Java object in JVM A on a Java object in JVM B? The EJB answer is through Remote Method Invocation (RMI). RMI predates EJB and Java.
