Common Desktop Environment

Common Desktop Environment (CDE) is a user interface that runs on the Window Manager and provides a number of utilities known as X utilities.

CDE provides four independent workspaces for users. Users can switch between these workspaces. For example, an administrator can perform user administration tasks in one workspace, work with application files in another, use backup tools in the third workspace, and monitor system performance in the fourth workspace.

Figure 6.1 shows a CDE workspace with several utility windows open. The window that appears across the bottom of the workspace is the Front Panel. You can use the subpanels in the Front Panel to open the applications or utility windows.
