SVM

SVM helps you manage a large number of disks and the data on those disks. You can use SVM to increase storage capacity and data availability. SVM also helps improve I/O performance. It uses virtual disks to manage physical disks and their associated data. This virtual disk is called a volume, which is functionally similar to a physical disk. SVM converts I/O requests directed at a volume into I/O requests to the underlying member disks. An easy way to build volumes is to use the GUI built into the SMC software. The Enhanced Storage tool within the SMC software presents you with a view of all the existing volumes.
