Exchange of data can be described as one of the primary functions of internetworks. However, to establish a smooth communication mechanism among networks that use diverse hardware and software configurations, a control mechanism that manages modification of data to a format compatible for data transmission must be established. The control mechanism must also manage the actual transfer of data over the diverse networks.
