Summary

The Transport layer of the TCP/IP reference model is responsible for ensuring data transmission between machines on diverse networks. The TCP service, which resides in the Transport layer, implements these services in addition to tracking the delivery of data. TCP offers connectivity services such as establishing connections, full-duplex connections, and half-duplex connections. TCP also provides data transfer services such as acknowledgement, retransmission, buffered transfer, and piggybacking. A wide range of application layer protocols such as DNS, FTP, HTTP, NFS, Rlogin, SMTP, and Telnet use the TCP service to implement connectivity and reliable data transfer features.
