Messaging Concepts and SMTP
The most commonly used service on the Internet is the mailing service. Users connected to an internetwork use e-mails to exchange information with each other. Using the mail services that are available on a TCP/IP internetwork are advantageous because they provide platform independent communication. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is a protocol that is present in the TCP/IP protocol suite for transferring mail in an internetwork. SMTP is an Application layer protocol (see Figure 10.1) that uses TCP for sending mail.
