The BOOTP Message Format

The message format is the same for both the BOOTP request and reply messages. Figure 14.3 shows the structure of a BOOTP message.

Fields Description
Operation Code Specifies if the message is a request packet or a reply packet. A request packet holds the value 1and a reply packet holds the value 2in this field.
Hardware Type Denotes the type of hardware technology being used. For example, if the hardware type is Ethernet, this field holds the value 1.
