Routing Concepts
Routing, one of the important functions of IP, is responsible for locating the best path to a target host. In the case of a local host, the ARP is used to locate the MAC of the target host and the datagram that is transmitted. The process is much more complex in the case of a remote host. Routing functions are required to ensure that the datagrams can reach the remote host and if the next hop router in the route is accessible. The IP Routing process determines the best possible route to reach the target host. Values are assigned to different routes based on the distance between the originating and the destination computers. The shortest possible route is preferred over the other routes.
