ATM Data Transmission Basics
Connection-oriented data transmission mechanisms exhibit certain common characteristics. For example, there is always a method of establishing a connection between the communicating computers. In addition, each connection is uniquely identified to prevent the transmission of data through a wrong connection. Typically, data that is transmitted over connection-oriented mechanisms are loaded into a datagram that contains a header, which holds information about the identity of the connection and integrity check measures.
