The Layout Modules
SMIL 2.0 provides four layout modules—a BasicLayout module, an AudioLayout module, a MultiWindowLayout module, and a HierarchicalLayout module. The latter three modules build on the functionality of the BasicLayout module. The modules are used to control positioning of visual output onscreen and to control the volume of audio output. If a host language has sufficient layout control, it need not implement any of the SMIL layout modules.
The BasicLayout Module
The BasicLayout module uses the layout element contained within the head element of a SMIL document. The BasicLayout module uses a visual rendering model consistent with that in version 2 of the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2) specification.
