There is more to a webpage than HTML code. As the browser loads and parses the HTML code, it will find references to other file types, including JavaScript, CSS, font, or image files. The browser requests each referenced file from the server. The server processes the request and sends the requested file to the browser. The browser receives the file and then must process it to continue loading the page. Many of these files need to be requested and loaded before any part of the page can be shown to a visitor.
