I wrote this book for very personal reasons. When my son was five, he asked me one night at bedtime why he had a life. It took me several weeks at that time to tell him he should live his life to leave the world a better place than he had found it. That was a weighty thought for a five-year-old. But when he reached his late teens, the same question came up again, this time in the context of wondering whether to go to university, what to study, and what career to follow. I found myself giving him much the same answer, that whatever path he chose to follow, he should lead a life that makes a difference.
