Top athletes like to be first. After COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in March 2020, a new competition emerged to be the first major international sports competition among elite athletes. World Athletics’ “Ultimate Garden Clash” won this race, and it also won attention for the future of virtual sports.
The “Ultimate Garden Clash” started on May 3, 2020. It featured pole vaulters Renaud Lavillenie, Sam Kendricks, and Mondo Du Plantis competing from their own backyards.
