Implementing Database Mail
Database Mail is used to send email from the SQL Server services. SQL Server 2005 first introduced Database Mail. Before this, DBAs were forced to use SQL Mail or come up with their own solution. SQL Mail required the installation of Outlook on the servers and Database Mail does not. This fact alone makes Database Mail far more useful than SQL Mail; however, Database Mail also supports redundancy through the use of multiple mail profiles and gives the DBA complete control over the allowed email features (attachments, retry attempts, etc.).
