Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access is a commercial desktop DBMS. Access is appropriate for managing small and medium-size databases. You can learn about Access at www.microsoft.com/office/access/.

This book covers Microsoft Access 2002. To determine which version of Access you are running, choose Help > About Microsoft Access.

In Access 2002, the default query mode is ANSI-89. You must enable ANSI-92 SQL query mode to run many of the examples in this book.

To enable ANSI-92 SQL query mode:

1.
Click Tools > Options to open the Options dialog box.
2.
Click the Tables/Queries tab.
3.
Select the This Database checkbox (Figure 1.1).
Figure 1.1. ANSI-92 SQL query mode allows you to run SQL statements that use ANSI-92 SQL syntax.
