BEFORE YOU START: WRITE A TREATMENT

Pitch the idea to your friends. Tell them what kind of movie it is, and then describe in 60 seconds what happens. Get feedback from these people and hone the idea until it’s sharp and clear.

Write your story as a single paragraph. Describe everything that happens, including the plot and characters, but limited to just twenty or so lines. Pinpoint from the start the most essential things about the film: the events, the characters, the atmosphere or mood, and the genre. You ...
