In the preceding chapters we looked at the importance of our interior states when we’re helping groups navigate through uncertainty and strong emotions. The six ways of standing cannot simply be summoned when they are needed. The capacities associated with each way of standing must be continuously cultivated and strengthened as psychological, spiritual, emotional, and physical “muscle memory.”

Inner-directed practices keep us on the journey of self-discovery and self-mastery. These practices foster awareness and create readiness. Practices help us to make friends with our emotional hot buttons; to move beyond our habitual ways of seeing, thinking, and doing; and to overcome the seduction of ego.
