IN THE AGE OF CLOUD and software-as-a-service (SaaS), the need for a defined network perimeter with demilitarized zones (DMZs)1 and firewalls is blurred or completely gone. Cybersecurity is a layered effort and must address risks at all levels of your business, both operations and technical. As you work your way out from the thing you want to produce you will eventually make your way to the network, where all your data travels and transverses. This can be your home router and Internet connection with you and your fellow founders, or a shared workspace or private office. Each brings similar and unique risks.
When you launch your start-up you might be working from a home office, garage, or friend's couch. In an environment that you own, and where you control the router you connect to such as your Wi-Fi, or plug directly into, it is a bit easier to ensure a higher level of security. The basics, like making sure you change the default login password, update the firmware or operating system, and enable any security features that are offered, are essential to keeping your network secure.
