What type of business are you?

It’s also important to understand where you fit as a business in the marketplace. There are two overall types of business, defined by who you’re selling to. Will you be selling to businesses or individual consumers?

If you’ll be selling to businesses, you’re a B2B – business to business – company.

If you’ll be selling to consumers, you’re a B2C – business to consumer – company.

Then there are secondary types of business, defined by what you do for your customer. These are:

  • Retail. You gather together a selection of products for your customers to buy via a catalogue, shop, website, stall at an event etc. In B2C you could be a clothes shop or a café. In B2B you might be an office supplies company.
