Registering with HMRC

If you’re not already registered with HMRC as the result of any earlier enquiries with them, then you should register now. I do recommend asking for a meeting with someone from their Business Support Team, or going to one of their workshops. They really do try to be very helpful. Your accountant will also be able to advise you on all matters relating to HMRC and may even do the registration for you if you ask nicely!

If you’re going to register for VAT, then take some time to read through the other leaflets that you ordered from HMRC. Consider:

  • Do you want to register under the flat-rate scheme for small businesses?
  • Do you want to account for VAT under the cash accounting scheme?
  • Is there a special retail scheme for you? ...
