Inferential Statistics III: Nonparametric Hypothesis Testing

Abstract

This chapter introduces a range of techniques for nonparametric hypothesis testing. The sign test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test are introduced as hypothesis tests that can be applied to either one-sample data or two-sample paired data. The sign test is based on knowledge of the binomial distribution, so this probability distribution is also described. The Mann–Whitney U test is introduced as a nonparametric test between two-sample unpaired data. Two versions of the chi-square test for categorical variables are described: for testing one-sample data against an expected distribution and for testing for independence between two sets of variables.
