Research Process

This short book emerged from a long and extensive research effort that focused on two basic questions. We often hear that we should spend more time reflecting, and we sometimes give versions of this advice to others. But what is reflection? And how can busy men and women find time to do it?

The research proceeded on two tracks. One was extensive background reading on reflection and related topics. The bibliography indicates the broad scope of this work—because the topic of reflection is multidimensional and can be understood from many important and thought-provoking perspectives. In the end, my notes on this reading became a sprawling literature review, roughly nine hundred single-spaced pages long. It was eventually ...
