The natural inclination when we receive a call to adventure, or more likely a challenge to our reality, is to refuse, refute or resist it. We may avoid the message or attack the messenger. Or we may simply remain inactive and continue to tread water. We may fake nostalgia to justify a desire to return to the comfort zone. But all of this is futile. What consolidates us in step-3, and makes it different from step-2, is the appearance of a guide or mentor, some type of genuine help.
