The next day, Markell entered the locker room first, carrying a notebook with scribbled notes filling the first few pages. He wore a serious look as he walked in and declared, “Coach, I OWNED this assignment. I owned it!” Then he gave him a big smile. “Get it?”
The players leaned up against their lockers as Markell shared the word he and James had explored. “Our word is Ownership.”
“We thought about this a lot and we think ownership is about taking responsibility for your words and actions. Like if you make a mistake or a bad choice, you can't pass it onto someone else because you did it, not them. And even if someone else made a mistake or contributed to a loss or failure, you must see your part in it. Don't blame them. Look at yourself and realize your choices are your own, and if you can see that then you can make new choices that are better for yourself and also for your team.”
