The next day at practice Markell showed up with his hand badly swollen and bruised. He told Coach David that he hadn't had time to get to the nurse yet, so David called his wife, the school athletic trainer, and asked her to come by. She was still in her office and promised to come down to the locker room to look at Markell's hand and tape it up.

Coach David stood in front of his team. Knowing they hadn't solved the stick mystery, they were gazing mournfully at the box of new uniforms with a look of defeat on their faces.

“The last two words are Consistency and Hope. I'll start with consistency. We can't bring our best effort one day and a weak effort another day.
