1. All of the names and companies in this book are heavily disguised composites.

2. Of these executives, 60 percent were American, 32 percent Asian, 5 percent European, and the rest were from other regions. They represented a cross-section of industries (17 percent public administration, 26 percent services, 12 percent finance, insurance, and real estate, 7 percent retail and wholesale trade, 6 percent transportation and utilities, 19 percent manufacturing, 7 percent construction, 6 percent agriculture, mining, forestry) and functional areas (5 percent finance, 11 percent marketing, 22 percent operations, 25 percent general management, 10 percent sales, 2 percent human resources, 25 percent other).
