Along with the dawn of personal computing and its increased adoption by businesses and universities came the need for file sharing. This need prompted several computer industry giants, including Sun Microsystems, IBM, Digital, HP, AT&T, and Apollo, to invest time and resources in defining a file system protocol to serve this purpose.

Sun Microsystems developed the Network File System (NFS) protocol, which uses Remote Procedure Calls (RPC); it was initially named SUN-RPC and later converged with Open Network Computing RPC (ONC RPC).
