Chapter 1: Introduction

Abstract

Computers gained popularity in commercial, scientific,engineering, and military applications after WW II. IBM introduced the S/360 computer family in 1964 with Multiple Virtual Storage - MVS operating system, which is perhaps the only aspect of IBM that has survived as the z-series with 64 bit addressing, hardwares assists), etc. Other computer companies have their own computer families and operating systems, although High Level Languages - HLLs were standardized.
