Chapter 4: Mirrored & hybrid arrays

Abstract

Mirrored disks classified as RAID1 protect against disk failures by storing data twice doubling disk access bandwidth. Hybrid Disk Arrays - HDAs store the XOR of pairs or more generally subsets of disks to provide a higher reliability level than RAID1, Basic mirroring is susceptible to disk overload when disk failures occur. Several RAID1 organizations which allow disk load balancing after disk failure are presented. Access latency can be improved by data placement and disk scheduling, e.g., accessing the disk whose arm is closer to the requested data block.
