It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

The best way to avoid billing problems is to be very clear upfront about costs. Talk to the person who approves your invoice before you begin the job, usually the production manager or producer. If there are rush fees because of a tight turnaround, make sure they are disclosed before starting. Be clear about who handles potential expenses such as travel, per diem (if on a distant location), parking, and freight. ...
