Though stories have been around since the beginning of human communications, scientific research into the particulars of the field is still relatively new. In his book looking at the science behind the power of story, Kendall Haven says that our minds were evolutionarily hardwired long before birth to think in specific story terms—that these internal neural story maps are not stored in our conscious mind but in the subconscious.1 Beyond these concepts, children are read stories before they are old enough to grasp the words being said to well beyond the formative years.
