12.1 INTRODUCTION

One of the authors of this book was brought into a factory that produced flexible electronics. It specializes in electroluminescence. This is a plastic product that lights up and can be seen in numerous car and truck dashboard displays. It can also be seen in signage, like in grocery stores and casinos, where electric sockets aren’t readily available.

He was brought in as Director of Quality and was given the task of reducing their 13+% defect rate. Because of the high defect rate, the organization overproduced everything. And the losses had an enormous impact on their profitability.
