As a first step to embedment planning, we scanned the literature to see what other companies were doing to transform themselves into innovative organizations. We found very few examples that fit with our innovation vision, especially our approach to involve everyone and everywhere. With no models among other organizations, we sought a consultant to work with as a partner in the creation of our embedment plan. We also wanted to learn specific innovation tools that would be needed to fuel the endeavor.
We began by contacting a field of large, well-known consulting firms. We invited them to come in to pitch their ideas and approaches. We intended to evaluate their approaches according to five primary tenets:
