Steps to Construct an Affinity Diagram
1. Select the topic or problem statement you want to address. Use a full statement and use neutral terms. Write this sentence on the top of a flip chart or on a large post-it note and put it at the top of the working space on a wall or several flip charts.
2. Explain what brainstorming is and the guidelines you will use. General guidelines normally include:
a. All ideas are valuable. Evaluating or criticizing ideas at this point is not allowed.
b. Participants can piggyback or build on the ideas of others.
c. Participants must wait their turn to add new ideas of build on a previous idea.
