Definition

Strategic staffing is the process that organizations use to identify and address the staffing implications of their business strategies and plans. Notice that it includes both identifying and addressing—not simply one or the other. Some companies implement strategic staffing solely to help them to identify issues such as staffing gaps (where demand exceeds supply) or surpluses (where supply exceeds demand). While this identification is a necessary part of the process, it is by itself insufficient. Strategic staffing is effective only when the process also defines what the organization should do to eliminate or reduce those staffing gaps and surpluses most effectively.
