Ultimately, it is the PSPECs and their interconnections that define the processing requirements. All the data flow diagrams could, in principle, be thrown away and no information would be lost. Removing the DFDs would take Figure 4.11 one further decomposition step, and would replace all the primitive bubbles with their PSPECs, which is not a very useful representation but which would provide all the information you could possibly need.
