Chapter 15. Defining Timing

15.1 Timing Overview

Although the primary purpose of this chapter is to discuss preparing response time specifications, it is worth first reviewing all the aspects of timing covered so far, in order to put them in perspective with each other and with the role of the requirements model.

First, recall our discussion in Chapter 7 explaining that only external response times should be specified in a requirements model; all internal response times are entirely a design consideration, and must be left to that phase. This makes the response time specification relatively simple, but it is vital nevertheless, for it specifies the times to which the sums of the internal responses in the eventual system must conform.
