  • Fluid, gases or dry materials with or without pressure are stored in specially made vessels with small thickness but adequate enough to sustain the load and pressure.
  • If the ratio of the thickness of the wall of the shell to internal diameter is less than image it is known as a thin shell.
  • In thin walled shells the pressure is uniformly distributed through the thickness of wall and the stress is computed easily.
  • If the walls of the shell are thick, the pressures are no longer uniformly distributed and the problem becomes complex.
