SEPTEMBER, Day 151: Stop Wasting Time

Sales truth bomb of the day: “You can spend a reasonable amount of time attending to feelings and fears, or you can squander an unreasonable amount of time managing unproductive behaviors.”

This quote by Brené Brown and shared in her book Dare to Lead will likely punch most sales leaders right in the gut.1 Sales culture and how teams are managed are structurally broken on so many levels. At the root of this dysfunction is an industry that keeps trying to engineer emotion and vulnerability out of sales as we try to turn people into machines. This is not working, and we're spending an unreasonable amount of time managing unproductive behaviors with outdated management strategies that aren't working.

We have to accept the fact that working in sales can be scary, emotional, and vulnerable. Sales is human. Spending a reasonable amount of time breaking mental health stigmas in sales and creating a space for vulnerable emotions to be discussed is the most efficient way to achieve consistently high performance in the twenty-first century.
