DECEMBER, Day 211: Your Inner Citadel

There is a common misconception that resilience is built during hard times, but it's not. It's built during the good times. It's why people who are healthy and take good care of their body recover from surgery faster. It's why athletes who train their physical health during the off-season get injured less during the season. It's why salespeople who prioritize their mental health outside of working hours bounce back from rejection and setbacks faster. And it's why people who had invested time into learning mindset, stress-management, and mental health best practices before the COVID-19 pandemic managed better through lockdown.

The Stoics call this process “building your Inner Citadel,” which is your inner fortress that no adversity can break. As Ryan Holiday explains in The Daily Stoic, “During the good times, we strengthen ourselves and our bodies so that during the difficult times, we can depend on it. We reinforce our inner fortress so we can depend on it later.”1

January 1 will likely bring some difficult times:

  • New year;
  • New quota;
  • New responsibilities;
  • New expectations.

Don't wait and enter these stressful times mentally out of shape. The preparation starts now so be intentional with strengthening your Inner Citadel this month.
