Overview—The Point, Polyline, and Polygon Method

The basic geometric properties for general solid shapes can be computed by using the polygon method. In this method, all shapes are represented by closed polygons. Curvilinear and circular shapes are represented by several straight-line segments. The properties of the overall shape are computed by geometric summation of the properties of a trapezoid defined by a projection of two consecutive points of the polygon on to the x- and y-axes.
