Coupling of PWAS Transducers to the Monitored Structure
This chapter analyzes how surface-mounted PWAS transducers couple with the structure through the bonding adhesive. Shear layer analysis is conducted for 1-D linear PWAS transducers and for 2-D circular PWAS transducers. Closed-form solutions for the shear lag distribution are derived. Effective pin-force and line-force models that simplify the analysis are established for 1-D and 2-D, respectively. These models yield an effective PWAS size that it is usually smaller than the physical PWAS size due to transmission losses in the shear layer.
