In Situ Phased Arrays with Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors
This chapter treats the use of PWAS transducers to achieve in situ phased arrays for active structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. The chapter starts with a review of the phased array concepts used in conventional NDE with special attention to guided-wave phased arrays. Next, the chapter introduces the PWAS phased-array principles starting with the linear PWAS array. The concept of embedded ultrasonics structural radar (EUSR) is presented and transmitter beamforming, receiver beamforming, and phased-array pulse-echo concepts are developed from first principles.
