The Picture Plane
The picture plane is like a window frame through which an artist sees the three-dimensional world. It also corresponds to the edge or borders of an artist’s drawing or painting surface.
The best way to understand the picture plane is to see it in action. Using a dark erasable marker on an upright piece of plexiglass, stand in one spot and—without moving your position—draw the exact outlines of what you see.
