Laying the Foundations

This chapter covers the job description, the person specification, candidate application forms, panel member rating form, and panel rating form.

The purpose of the recruitment process is to select the right candidate for the job. Often we focus our attention on the latter stages of the process—the interview and other forms of assessment—but in order to make sure these are effective we need to put in place firm foundations. This involves ensuring that:

  • Everyone is clear about the requirements of the job.
  • Applicants have the opportunity to provide relevant evidence of their ability to do the job.
  • Panel members have an opportunity to systematically consider the evidence presented by applicants.
