Don’t anesthetize your readers
It seems obvious that you shouldn’t put your audience to sleep, doesn’t it? It should also be obvious to people who talk in circles at dinner parties or deliver dull lectures, but consider how many boring speakers you’ve had to listen to. It doesn’t have to be that way—whether in conversation or in writing.
Ponder the best conversationalists and the best lecturers you’ve ever heard. No matter how obscure the topic, they make it fascinating through their technique. They avoid trite expressions. They use strong, simple words. Think of Winston Churchill’s famous phrase “blood, toil, tears, and sweat.” And remember what George Washington reputedly said when questioned about the fallen cherry tree: not “It ...
