The Sun Cluster 3 release introduced the facility to run multiple instances of the same application on multiple nodes of a cluster using the same set of data and the same network address, regardless of the physical node on which an instance is run. In the Sun Cluster 3 environment, an application deployed in this manner is called a scalable service, since the number of instances can be “scaled” dynamically from one to many and back again, without bringing the entire service offline at any point.
