Chapters 1–3: The New Kid

Trent struggled in the past to fit in with kids at school and dreads the bullying he is certain will be repeated at his new school. He is focused on the areas where he thinks he is different from his peers and believes that hiding them will make people like him more.

Think of a time you were the new person and didn't know anyone.

  1. What group was it with or what type of situation was it?
  2. What were you most worried about?
  3. What did you feel the most confident about?
  4. Do you remember what you first noticed in your first interaction with this group of people? How would you describe how comfortable you felt?
  5. Have you ever had an experience when someone made you feel special for something that makes you unique or when they made you feel self-conscious because you are different in some way?

Chapters 4–5: Meet Trent and Emma

Although Trent dreads meeting new people because of negative past experiences, Emma seems unaffected by the opinions of others. Trent is focusing on areas of himself that he feels bad about, and Emma is focused on having fun in the moment.

  1. Do you identify more with Trent or Emma when it comes to being yourself?
  2. Do you think you spend more time focused on the present moment, worried about the future, or about what others will think of you in interactions that are coming up?
