“And,” said Mr. Inimitable, also known as Coach Trent, “As the song came to an end, Mr. E gave me a nod to go ahead and share what I said I would like to talk to the class about. I asked them to join me under the tree outside. As they gathered around me in our favorite spot, I told them about my experiences moving and being teased. I told them why I wore the hat and the plain clothes at the beginning of the week.
And then I did something that made Mr. E so proud that he told me he knew it was a moment he would never forget as a teacher. I went around the circle and shared what I thought was unique and special about each person in the class.”
“Coach, what happened to the teacher, to Mr. E?” asked Meredith.
Mr. Inimitable smiled and looked over to the tree behind the field where he had spent that morning telling his class about his struggles and recognizing their superpowers. “Let's walk over to the tree and we can finish practice there,” he said, leading them to a spot that he'd cherished for so many years.
“This plaque on the tree wasn't here when I was a student,” he said. “We put this up five years ago when Mr. E passed away to always remember the lives he touched and the love he poured into all of us with his mysteriously fun teaching and Puzzle Week, which we still do, to this day!”
