EXPLORATORY INTERVIEWS

The purpose of the exploratory interview is to lay the problem on the table in a nonthreatening manner. Both parties should have an equal chance to communicate; both old and new facts should be introduced; if possible, the roots of the problem should be revealed. Sometimes the exploratory interview can do it all.

Sally took Jennifer out to lunch to discover, if possible, what was causing her hostility. She found a private place, made certain that the environment was relaxed, and then introduced the subject.
